Northern Cardinal

West Virginia has so many species of wildlife that identify with our state itself. A couple of these majestic animals include the northern cardinal, brook trout, and black bear. We would love to shed some light and help others to appreciate the natural wonders of West Virginia. First, we would like to highlight one of our favorite birds, the Northern Cardinal.

Scientific Name: Cardinalis cardinalis

Color

Male: Red

Female: Brown

Size and Shape

The Northern Cardinal is fairly large, for a bird. In comparison, a Northern Cardinal is slightly smaller than an American Robin.

Where to Find

If you live in West Virginia, you should have no problem finding a Northern Cardinal.  Most commonly, cardinals are found in wooded areas, such as backyards, parks, and the wooded edges of roads.
